10 Suggestions for Parents When Your
Child is Participating in a Sporting Event
- Parents should be seen but not heard at a sporting
event.
- Dont draw attention to yourself on the sidelines
or the stands. The sporting event is about the kids, not
the parents.
- Do not be louder or smarter than the official or coach
from the stands.
- Say positive praise to all participants in the
event.
- Stay away from highlighting one individual and praise
the team. Generic comments are suggested.
- Do not criticize your own child during the event.
- "Why aren't you running faster"
- "Run faster Jimmy"
- "You have to catch that ball Johnny"
- Don't do play by play from the sidelines.
- Let the coaches coach the kids and let the kids listen
to the coaches.
- If you cannot control yourself emotionally or
physically, you must remove yourself from the pack and stand
by yourself.
- Leave the officials alone during the event.
- It's ok to applaud a great play by an opposing
player.
- Your child will model your behavior on and off
the field.
- Make sure you smile at your child's event whether
they win or lose. Your child will know exactly where you are
sitting in the stands, and will be looking for your approval
on every aspect of the game. Make sure you allow your child to
smile at their sporting event.
- If an official warns you at a game for your behavior,
take it seriously because the consequences will affect your child
directly. Don't put that responsibility on your child.
